Building the Path to a Better Life

42 year old Husband and Father trying to do better every day

PT

Physical therapy went well.  No bs ball bouncing etc, just traction and ice and muscle stimulation.  THe mechanical traction was scary but I think it really helped.  Still have slight pain and definately still have numbness in my hand but getting better.

2 weeks until Specialist check up, hoping for much improvbement and the A-OK to run again.

That’s it for now.  Off for a two day trip to DC area.

First PT visit today.  Hoping for some relief and praying for no additional damage.  I hate anyone messing with my neck.

Gaining weight by the day.  I want to run but walking is it for now.  Gotta lay off the comfort foods that make me feel better about having this disk issue.  Feeling bad for myself is no way to deal with this.

Need to eat better and keep walking.

No surgery…for now

Had a specialist review my report and MRI and he feels that PT will be enough to get the disk back into the disk space.  If not I may need a cortisone epidural shot but he does not feel I will need another surgery to repair or remove the disk.

This is good news, in addition to the fact that I feel a little better.

No running or really anything for three weeks.  I am going to have to really watch my diet with no exercise other than light PT stuff.

The return of the cervical spine

Five years ago I had microdiscectomy surgery on my C6-C7 disk. Not a great thing to happen and it took awhile to feel comfortable doing anything physical.

Playing racquetball two weeks ago I felt a pull in my shoulder and shut it down for the night. Two days later I was done- huge bulging disc sitting on the nerve, fingers numb, the whole bit. I was very scared that surgery was coming again.

The pain has gotten better but the disk is still sitting on the nerve. Specialist visit tomorrow, he is the same one who read my report 5 years ago and knew right away I was a surgical case. It took 4 other neurologists agreeing with him for me to have the surgery but he was correct from the get go. I am hoping that he is correct again but this time he says I just need physical therapy.

So no running or racquetball for me….just hoping to stay out of the operating room at this point. Trying to watch what I eat to keep weight loss ( 12 lbs right now) going or at least not gaining.

Mud Run ????

5K????

Very disappointing but things could be worse. I need a good Doctor’s appointment tomorrow and a positive attitude.

Keep you posted…

WIW or why a gain could be ok

WIW: Week 3

Weigh In: February 15, 2012

SW: 233.8

Last weigh in: 225.8 (2/1/2012)

This week: 228.6

Loss: +2.8

Total Loss: -5.2

GWL: ?? Maybe 185 (although 183 would be 50 lbs lost so maybe that)

OK, I gained weight this week from last. Lots of reasons why but the top two are pretty obvious and classic. I ate too much and didn’t workout enough. Duh, tough math there.

I am actually OK with this since I cheated really bad over the weekend and yesterday (valentine’s day) but only added about 3 pounds. Being at the beginning of this journey the swings up and down will be big until I get the “bloat” and real excess weight off.

Need to step up again this week and pick up where I left off last week. THe true test will be if I treat this as another failure and fall into the abyss again or if I recover and use it as motivation.

If I use this as motivation then this is OK as it did not kill me but could, rather, make me stronger.

Off to run with the dog. :)

Robin Does Running: Locker Room Confessional...

robindoesrunning:

I woke up this morning at 4:44 with out the help of an alarm.

I rolled over and knew I had made the mistake of not sleeping elevated. I was greeted with throbbing sinuses and feeling as if my eyeballs would pop right out of their socket. I knew when I got up and started moving around it would…

This girl rocks. My favorite line from this inspirational story…”For me it meant getting mad, giving the finger to an empty locker room”. Awesome!

Went to gym even though I ran yesterday

I was feeling pumped by my weight loss and good eating lately. Decided to go to gym.

10 minutes treadmill with 5 minute run.

11 minutes on rowing machine (first time ever)

7 minutes treadmill with 3 minute run

Just finished a big salad which I had prepped this morning- BOOM!

Feeling it! Tumblr keeping me accountable and motivated.
